General

The Builder's Trowel is a tool for quickly filling large areas with a mix of building blocks, instead of placing every single block by hand. It comes in two variants:

  • Builder's Trowel - an Iron-tier tool.
  • Diamond Builder's Trowel - a Diamond-tier tool that blends the blocks it places into smooth, natural-looking patches instead of scattering them completely at random (see Usage).

Both variants are Uncommon rarity tools with four times the durability of a regular tool of the same material (an Iron Trowel has 1000 uses, a Diamond Trowel 6244). Because the Trowel is tagged as a Shovel-equivalent tool, it can also be used to dig Shovel-appropriate blocks like Dirt, Sand or Gravel - though its low attack damage and very slow attack speed make it a poor weapon.

Using a Trowel for the first time grants an advancement.

The Builder's Trowel tools are added by the features.allowBuilderTools option in main.json. There are no world-specific Game Rules for this feature.

Usage

Right-click a block with the Trowel in hand, just like you would place a normal block. Instead of placing itself, the Trowel looks through the 9 slots of your hotbar for blocks that could legally be placed at the targeted position, and places one of them for you.

Which block gets picked is weighted by how many you are carrying: a full stack of a block is much more likely to be chosen than a single leftover block of another type sitting in another hotbar slot. If none of the blocks in your hotbar can be placed at the targeted position, nothing happens.

Iron Trowel

The Iron Trowel picks a block completely at random (weighted by stack size, as described above) every single time you use it, so the result is a fully random scatter of whatever building blocks you are carrying.

Diamond Trowel

The Diamond Trowel picks its block using a smooth 3D noise field instead of pure randomness. The noise is sampled at the position you are building at, and each crafted Diamond Trowel uses its own random seed. Because the noise value changes gradually from block to block, nearby placements tend to pick the same block type, which blends the different materials into smooth, natural-looking patches rather than a random scatter - similar to how deepslate or stone variants blend together in natural terrain.

Durability and Advancement

Every successful placement costs the Trowel 1 point of durability (unless you are in Creative mode). The first time you successfully place a block with a Trowel, you are granted the "Used Trowel" advancement.

Recipe

Builder's Trowel
Diamond Builder's Trowel

Crafted from a Stick and either Iron Ingots or Diamonds:

  • Row 1: Iron Ingot - Iron Ingot - Iron Ingot
  • Row 2: (empty) - Iron Ingot - (empty)
  • Row 3: (empty) - Stick - (empty)

The Diamond Builder's Trowel uses the same pattern, with Diamonds instead of Iron Ingots.
